THLA Statement on the Trump Administration
Since day one of the start of the new administration there has been an onslaught of measures that attack the very communities, values, and ideals, that we at the Tom Homann LGBTQ+ Law Association (“THLA”) aim to protect. Since the new administration has taken over, we have seen a significant number of executive orders and proposed legislation that aim to attack the most vulnerable communities, targeting them for their mere existence.
Members from our LGBTQ+ community, the immigrant community, and other diverse communities throughout this country are being scrutinized and stripped of their most fundamental liberties. Further, we also face challenges to our mission of advocating for a more inclusive and diverse profession. This unjustified attack on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts is senseless and has drastically reversed years of progress aimed at welcoming members of all communities with a seat at the table, not only in our legal profession but in all fields where minorities have been disparately treated.
THLA remains dedicated to advancing not only the interests of our LGBTQ+ community, but nearly every community that has historically been mistreated and marginalized. We will always work to create a safe space for every member of our community not only in the legal profession, but all throughout the diverse San Diego community.
Despite the tactics this administration has taken, we remain resilient and true to our fundamental value of seeking justice for all. We remain grateful and hopeful that the Constitution, and its core values, will prevail over the hate and injustice that this administration and its officials promote.
We encourage our members and our allies to remain vigilant and true to the mission of THLA, to look out for one another and to establish meaningful connections in and out of our legal profession, despite the differences we may have. We all share the belief that every individual should be treated with decency and that all should be able to live their lives free from the fear of persecution based on who they are or whom they love.
THLA is committed to ensuring that we provide resources and programming so that every individual feels welcomed and respected. THLA will continue to stand strong in the coming years, and we will not back down from any measure that harms our community or our mission.
